West Lake Drive Bridges: 2026 Repairs and the 2028–2030 Replacement Plan

September 17, 2026

Drive West Lake Drive this September and you will hit the same thing residents hit in 2022 and again in 2025: a lane cut down to one, a flagger waving cars through, and a City of Fort Lauderdale sign explaining that crews are making structural repairs to a bridge between E. Lake Drive and Mercedes Drive. Work started April 29, 2026, and the city has told residents to expect it through fall 2026. The three bridges have received repairs on different spans, and full replacement is scheduled to begin in fall 2028 and finish in summer 2030.

For residents of Harbor Beach's isles, these projects affect the crossings that connect the neighborhood to the mainland.

West Lake Drive's Three Bridge Spans

West Lake Drive carries traffic over three separate spans, and each one has needed emergency attention on its own schedule. In 2022, crews made structural repairs to the bridge between Del Lago Drive and Isla Bahia Drive. In the summer of 2025, the target moved to the segment between SE 14th Street/Lucille Drive and SE 15th Street/Mercedes Drive, with construction running from late June through early October. Now, in 2026, the work has shifted again, to the section between E. Lake Drive and Mercedes Drive.

Three different repair projects, three different stretches of the same road, spread across four years. The three bridges are approaching the end of their useful life, and the city plans to replace them.

One Bridge, One Isle

The reason this matters more here than it would on an ordinary city street is the geography. Harbor Beach is not one continuous grid. It is a set of isles: Laguna Isle, Lucille Isle, Del Lago Isle, and Isla Bahia, each connected back to the mainland by a limited number of crossings. Harborage Isle, a smaller enclave of just 17 waterfront homes on New River Sound, has its own guard gate and its own security on top of that. South of 17th Street, Harbor Isles and Harbor Inlet sit behind fixed bridges of their own, facing Port Everglades.

When one segment of West Lake Drive goes down to a single lane, it is not a minor inconvenience on a road with alternatives. For a resident of Del Lago Isle or Isla Bahia, that lane may be the only practical way in or out during peak hours. The isolation that makes Harbor Beach feel private and quiet is the same structural feature that makes a bridge repair a daily fact of life rather than a background annoyance.

Full Bridge Replacement Timeline

Here is the number that actually explains the pattern: the city's plan to replace all three West Lake Drive bridges, not repair them again, comes with an estimated construction cost of $9.2 million, funded partly by the city and partly by federal dollars. Design work and data collection, including surveying and waterway inspections, wrapped up back in October 2023. Construction on that full replacement is not scheduled to begin until fall 2028, about two years from now, with completion targeted for summer 2030.

The 2026 repairs are separate work ahead of the planned replacement. The bridges carry official designations, numbers 865773, 865774, and 865771.

Broward County Commissioner Lamar Fisher, discussing the Port Everglades Bypass Road project meant to ease congestion at US 1 and the 17th Street Causeway, said in an NBC 6 South Florida report that residents in Harbordale and Harbor Beach "have been thirsty for this for so long." That project broke ground in 2024, and Broward County has since completed the connector. The West Lake Drive bridge replacement is a separate project.

Harbor Beach Association Services

The Harbor Beach Association self-funds security, landscaping, and shared amenities including a surf club and marina, and has partnered with a private security firm, Sig 9, to run patrols across the community.

Keep that division in mind the next time a repair crew shows up on West Lake Drive. The city handles bridges and roads. The association funds the security, landscaping, and amenities described above.

What This Fall Actually Looks Like

Based on how the previous West Lake Drive segment was handled in 2025, a few things tend to hold true across these projects. Work generally happens on weekdays, but because some structural repairs can only be done at low tide, crews sometimes shift into evenings or weekends to get the access they need. One lane of the bridge has stayed open throughout construction on past segments, so the road does not fully close, but expect delays at the times tide schedules force the extra work. Any of this can shift with weather, so the posted schedule is a target, not a guarantee.

If you are timing school pickups, deliveries, or a boat's departure around the bridge, build in a buffer during the posted construction window rather than assuming the lane restriction only applies during business hours.

Planning Around West Lake Drive's Repairs and Replacement

For anyone traveling to or from an isle, distinguishing the current repairs from the planned full replacement is useful context when planning around the work.
